Best Order to Play the Fable Games: Chronological, Narrative & Gameplay Evolution

How to Approach the Fable Trilogy

Each Fable game occurs in a distinct era of Albion's history, so there's no single "correct" sequence. Below are three popular approaches.

1. Chronological Order (In‑Universe Timeline)

  1. Fable Anniversary (remake of the original) — Year 1005. The earliest setting; establishes the Heroes' Guild and core lore.
  2. Fable II — Year 1505 (500 years later). Industrial revolution arrives; magic fades; new Hero rises.
  3. Fable III — Year 1555 (50 years after II). You play as the monarch's child, shaping Albion's political future.

2. Narrative & Lore Progression

Identical to chronological order. Anniversary introduces the world and the "Hero" legacy; II expands on consequences of the first game's choices; III directly references events and bloodlines from both predecessors.

3. Gameplay Evolution

  1. Fable Anniversary — Classic action‑RPG with simpler mechanics, morality system, and hub‑based exploration.
  2. Fable II — Adds expression system, dog companion, co‑op, deeper economy, and open‑world feel.
  3. Fable III — Introduces rule‑the‑kingdom phase, touch‑based interactions (on PC), and streamlined combat.

Recommendation

For newcomers, play in release/chronological order (Anniversary → II → III). This preserves story reveals and lets you appreciate gameplay refinements. Veterans may enjoy replaying in any order to test different moral alignments.
