Games Like Fate (Tabletop) and World of Warcraft (MMO) – Bridging Narrative Freedom & Theme-Park MMO

Fate (narrative RPG, collaborative worldbuilding) and World of Warcraft (theme-park MMO, class-based combat) are opposites. Games bridging or resembling each:

Like Fate (Narrative Freedom, Light Rules)

  • D&D 5e: More structure, but flexible; massive support.
  • Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA): Apocalypse World, Monsterhearts, The Sprawl — play to find out, moves trigger fiction.
  • Fiasco: GM-less, Coen-brothers-style disaster stories.
  • Blades in the Dark: Crew-based heists, flashbacks, resistance system.

Like WoW (MMORPG, Class Combat, Persistent World)

  • Final Fantasy XIV: Best modern theme-park MMO; story-first, job system, housing, 24M+ players.
  • Guild Wars 2: Buy-to-play, horizontal progression, dynamic events, no sub.
  • The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel open world, action combat, flexible builds, fully voiced.
  • Black Desert Online: Action combat, deep life skills, beautiful graphics, PvP-focused endgame.

Hybrids (Story + MMO)

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic: 8 class stories (BioWare quality), then standard MMO. Free-to-play restrictions.
  • The Secret World / Secret World Legends: Modern horror, investigation missions, no classes.
  • Pathfinder Online (defunct): Was tabletop+MMO hybrid; server closed.

For tabletop feel: PbtA games. For modern MMO: FFXIV. For both: SWTOR (story) or ESO (exploration freedom).
