How to Enter Cheat Codes on Nintendo DSi — You Can't (Officially)

The Nintendo DSi has no built-in cheat code entry system. Unlike GameShark/Action Replay cartridges for original DS/DS Lite, the DSi's firmware blocks unauthorized cartridges and has no cheat menu.

Why Cheat Devices Don't Work on DSi

  • DSi-Enhanced/Exclusive Games: Use DSi-specific hardware (cameras, SD slot, faster CPU). Old flashcarts (R4, AK2, GameShark DS) lack DSi-mode support.
  • System Updates: Nintendo patched the exploit used by flashcarts in DSi firmware 1.4.1 (2009). Later updates (1.4.2–1.4.5) blocked more.
  • No GBA Slot: Slot-2 devices (GameShark SP, Action Replay Max Duo) physically don't fit.

What *Does* Work (Homebrew / CFW)

Only on a **DSi with Custom Firmware (Unlaunch + HiyaCFW / TWiLight Menu++)**:

  1. Install **Unlaunch** (bootloader exploit) via dsi.cfw.guide.
  2. Install **HiyaCFW** (emulates NAND on SD) + **TWiLight Menu++** (frontend).
  3. In TWiLight Menu++: **Settings → Cheats → Enable** → Download `usrcheat.dat` (from FlagBrew repo).
  4. Per-game: Press **L+R+START** (configurable) → Cheat menu → Toggle codes.

Risks of CFW

  • **Brick:** Low risk if guide followed, but possible.
  • **No Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection:** Shut down 2014. Only local/WFC homebrew (AltWFC).
  • **eShop:** Closed 2017. No DSiWare purchases.

Better Alternative: Play on 3DS

  • 3DS plays all DS/DSi games.
  • CFW (Luma3DS) is safer, easier, actively maintained.
  • Cheats via **Rosalina menu** (L+Down+Select) or **Checkpoint / JKSV** for save editing.
  • Used 2DS/3DS: $50–$80. Worth it for full library + cheats + sleep mode.

Summary: Stock DSi = no cheats. CFW DSi = possible but complex. **Buy a 3DS + CFW** for the best cheat experience on DS/DSi games.
