Why Does Call of Duty: World at War Say 'Cheats Not Available from Server' on PC?

This error appears when the game cannot validate cheat permissions with the (now largely defunct) backend.

Root Causes

  • Master Server Shutdown: Activision/Demonware deprecated the legacy CoD: WaW auth servers. The client polls for cheat allowance; timeout = "not available."
  • Patch 1.7 (Final): Disabled cheat commands in ranked/online modes to curb hacking. Single-player cheats (devmap, god, noclip) still work if you launch correctly.
  • Steam Version vs. Retail/Disc: Steam version may have stricter DRM blocking console activation.
  • Modded / Pirated Copy: Altered executables strip cheat handlers.

Fixes to Enable Console Cheats (Single Player Only)

  1. Verify Integrity (Steam): Library → WaW → Properties → Installed Files → Verify.
  2. Launch with Dev Console: Steam → Properties → Launch Options: +set developer 1 +set sv_cheats 1 +set monkeytoy 0 (or create shortcut with these args).
  3. Offline Mode: Steam → Go Offline → Launch. Bypasses server check.
  4. Mods: UGX Mod, WaW Community Mod, Custom Zombies Maps (via UGX Mod Manager) include cheat menus, god mode, noclip, give weapons.
  5. Config Edit: players2\config_mp.cfg → seta sv_cheats "1" (read-only after).

Warning

Using sv_cheats 1 in multiplayer (even private match) can trigger VAC ban. Use only in solo/Zombies custom games.
