What Are Cheat Codes and How Do You Get Them?

What Are Cheat Codes?

Originally: button combos, passwords, or phrases entered during gameplay to unlock extras—infinite lives, invincibility, level skips (e.g., Konami Code, "God Mode").

Modern Reality

• Rare in new games: Designers prioritize balanced challenge; microtransactions replace unlockables; online play makes cheats unfair.

Historical Sources

• Game manuals, gaming magazines (Nintendo Power), word-of-mouth, dedicated websites.

Modern "Cheat" Methods

• Cheat Engine: Memory manipulation for infinite health/ammo. Risky—can void warranty, cause instability.
• Mods: Community-created modifications adding cheat-like features.
• Glitches/exploits: Unintended mechanics players discover (not developer-intended).

Ethical Note

• Cheats can ruin multiplayer fairness.
• Developers generally discourage them—they disrupt designed experience.

Cheats are less common now. For challenge, play as intended. For casual fun, explore mods or built-in accessibility options.
