Action Replay Codes for Super Smash Bros. 64? Impossible—N64 Cart Has No Writable Memory

Action Replay codes cannot be used on Super Smash Bros. 64. The device works by writing cheat data to a cartridge's save memory (SRAM/Flash/EEPROM), but the Super Smash Bros. N64 cartridge has no writable save memory—it's a mask ROM with zero bytes of persistent storage.

Why It Fails

  • Action Replay intercepts the cartridge bus and patches code in real-time, but it needs a save region to store the cheat table. SSB64 has none.
  • GameShark faces the same limitation—no support for this title.

Alternatives for Modded Play

  • ROM Mods (Emulator): Custom ROMs via Project64 / Mupen64Plus / Parallel-N64 add characters, stages, mechanics, balance changes. Super Smash Bros. 64: Remix, Melee HD ports, etc.
  • In-Game Glitches: Controller combos unlock hidden content (Master Hand playable, debug menu, stage select) — no external device needed.
  • Flashcarts (EverDrive 64, SummerCart64): Load patched ROMs on real hardware. Requires flashcart ($100–$200).

Mods/cheats may destabilize the game. Use at your own risk. Back up saves.
