Can You Play Nintendo DS Games on a Wii? No—Here's Why and Modern Alternatives

No. The Wii cannot play Nintendo DS cartridges.

Technical Barriers

• Media: DS uses proprietary Mask ROM cartridges (Card); Wii uses 12cm Optical Discs (and 8cm GC discs).
• Architecture: Dual ARM CPUs (DS) vs. PowerPC Broadway (Wii). Different GPU, memory map, I/O.
• Inputs: DS has dual screens (one touch), microphone, hinge sensor. Wii has none of these natively.

Historical Note: Virtual Console

The Wii Shop Channel (closed 2019) offered a handful of DS titles (e.g., Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training, Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again!) as "DSiWare" ports running in a wrapper—but these were not the original cartridge games and are no longer purchasable.

Modern Option

Play DS games on Nintendo 3DS/2DS (full backward compatibility) or via emulation (melonDS, DeSmuME) on PC/Android using legally dumped ROMs.
