Can You Trade Pokémon Between Game Boy and Nintendo DS?

Direct trading between Game Boy (Color/Advance) games and Nintendo DS games is not possible due to hardware and communication differences:

  • Cartridge incompatibility: Game Boy uses cartridges; DS uses game cards.
  • Different link methods: Game Boy requires a Link Cable; DS uses local wireless or Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (discontinued).

Workarounds (Advanced/Unofficial)

  1. Emulators with virtual link cables: Some PC emulators (e.g., VBA-Link, DeSmuME) can simulate a link between emulated Game Boy and DS games.
  2. Third-party transfer services: Certain websites offer Pokémon migration, but these are unofficial, often violate Terms of Service, and may pose security risks.

Legitimate Path

The intended way to move Pokémon forward is via Pal Park (in Diamond/Pearl/Platinum/HeartGold/SoulSilver) which requires a Game Boy Advance cartridge inserted into a DS/DS Lite—not a DS game trading with a GB game. For modern play, use Pokémon HOME with supported titles.
