Nintendogs: Dogs Saved to Console Memory, Not Disc — How It Works

Your Nintendogs are saved to the DS/3DS system memory (or SD card on 3DS), not the game cartridge.

Data Flow

  • Cartridge: Read-only game code + assets.
  • Save File (.sav): Written to console NAND (DS/DSi) or SD card (3DS) — stores all dogs, progress, items, trainer info.
  • Backup: DS: None official. 3DS: Save Data Backup (System Settings) or Checkpoint/JKSM (CFW).

Implications

  • Same cartridge + different console = different dogs.
  • Different cartridge + same console = same dogs (if same game ID).
  • Lost/stolen console = lost dogs (unless 3DS SD backup exists).

You don't "get dogs to the disc." The disc/cartridge is the program; the console holds your world.
