Downloading Japanese DSiWare on US DSi: Blocked by Region Lock

You cannot download Japanese DSiWare on a North American DSi.

Why:

• Region Locking: DSi/DSi XL enforce region checks on both hardware and Nintendo Network account.
• Shop Region Tie: A US DSi connects only to the US DSi Shop. Japanese titles are invisible.
• Account Region: Nintendo Network ID (NNID) region is fixed at creation; cannot change.

No Official Workaround:

• System settings cannot change region.
• Flashcarts (R4i, etc.) only run DS-mode homebrew/ROMs—cannot access DSi Shop or run DSiWare.

Alternatives:

• Import a Japanese DSi/3DS: Region-free for DS games; DSiWare/3DS eShop locked to JP region. Requires JP NNID and JP eShop funds.
• Emulation (PC/Phone): melonDS, DraStic can run dumped DSiWare .cia/.nds files. Legal only if you own the game.
• Physical Copies: Some DSiWare-exclusive titles got retail cart releases in Japan (rare).
