Outputting Nintendo DS Video to TV or Monitor: Complete Guide

You can output DS video to a TV or monitor, but not with a simple cable. The method depends entirely on your DS model.

By Model

  • DS Phat / DS Lite: Have a proprietary AV Multi-Out port. Use the Nintendo DS AV Cable (Composite: Yellow/Red/White) → TV composite input. No S-Video or Component support. Quality: 240p/480i, blurry on modern HDTVs.
  • DSi / DSi XL: No AV port. Cannot output video natively.

Modern Solutions (All Models)

  1. Capture Card (Best Quality):
    • Install an NDS/3DS capture card (hardware mod: Loopy, Merki, 3DS Capture). Requires soldering/professional install ($150–300+).
    • Outputs clean digital HDMI/USB. Works with OBS, monitors, TVs.
  2. Camera / Phone (Zero Cost): Point a camera at the DS screen. Use a stand, good lighting, manual focus. Sufficient for guides and casual streaming.
  3. Emulator + HDMI (PC/Phone): Play on melonDS, DeSmuME, or DraStic → output to monitor/TV via HDMI. Legal only with dumped ROM/save you own.
  4. Wii U Virtual Console (DS Games): Nintendo released ~20 DS titles on Wii U eShop (now closed). Play on Wii U GamePad (DS screens mapped) or TV. Limited library.

Not Recommended

  • Third-party "DS to HDMI" cables on Amazon/eBay: Most are fake (composite only) or non-functional.
  • DSi AV cables: Do not exist—the port is physically absent.

Best Practical Approach: melonDS on PC → HDMI to TV (with legal backups) or capture card mod for original hardware purity.
