Can Nintendo DS Games Play on 3DS?

Yes. The Nintendo 3DS (all models: original, XL, 2DS, New 3DS, New 3DS XL, New 2DS XL) is backward compatible with nearly all Nintendo DS cartridges.

How It Works

  • Physical slot: The 3DS has a dedicated DS/DSi cartridge slot (back/top).
  • Native execution: The ARM7/ARM9 CPUs run DS code directly—no emulation overhead.
  • Screen mapping: Top screen = DS main display; bottom screen = DS touch screen (fully functional).

Caveats

  • Not 100%: A handful of DS titles that require the GBA slot (e.g., Guitar Hero: On Tour grip, Pokémon Ranger rumble pak) won’t work fully.
  • No 3D: DS games display in 2D only—the 3DS parallax barrier is disabled.
  • Region lock: DSi-enhanced / DSi-exclusive carts are region-locked; standard DS carts are region-free.
  • New 3DS/2DS XL may run a few titles slightly smoother due to faster CPU.

The 3DS is arguably the best way to play DS games today—sharp screens, sleep mode, and save-state support via homebrew (if you install CFW).
