Will DSi SD Card Play iTunes Files?

No. The Nintendo DSi cannot play iTunes files (AAC .m4a with FairPlay DRM or standard AAC) directly from an SD card. The DSi’s built-in music player only supports:

  • AAC (.m4a, .mp4, .3gp) – DRM-free only
  • MP3 (.mp3)

How to Get Your iTunes Music on DSi

  1. Remove DRM (if purchased before 2009): Use iTunes “Convert to MP3” (File → Convert → Create MP3 Version) or burn to Audio CD → rip back as MP3.
  2. Convert to DSi-compatible AAC/MP3: 128–256 kbps, 44.1 kHz, stereo.
  3. Copy to SD card: Place files in /music/ or any folder; the DSi scans recursively.
  4. Launch “Nintendo DSi Sound” from the main menu to play.

Limitations

  • DSi internal storage is tiny (256 MB); SD card max 32 GB (SDHC).
  • No playlist support, no background playback while gaming.
  • Cannot stream—files must be copied to SD first.

For a better portable music experience, consider a dedicated MP3 player or smartphone.
