How Many DS Games Fit on an R4 Flashcart? It Depends on Your microSD Card

You don't "fit" physical cartridges into an R4 card. An R4 is a flashcart—a device that reads game files (ROMs) from a microSD card inserted into the R4, which then plugs into your Nintendo DS/DS Lite/DSi slot-1.

How It Actually Works

  1. Insert a microSD card (typically 2GB–32GB, depending on R4 model) into the R4 flashcart.
  2. Load .nds game files onto the microSD via a computer.
  3. Insert the R4 into your DS. The menu lists all games on the card.
  4. Select a game to launch it instantly—no cartridge swapping needed.

How Many Games?

Depends on microSD capacity and average game size (16MB–256MB, most ~64MB):

  • 2GB card: ~25–30 games
  • 8GB card: ~100–120 games
  • 32GB card: ~400–500 games

Critical Legal & Ethical Notes

  • R4 devices are unofficial and violate Nintendo's terms of service.
  • Downloading ROMs you don't own is piracy. Creating personal backups of your own cartridges is a legal gray area (varies by country).
  • Malware risk: Many ROM sites host infected files.
  • Online play is often broken on flashcarts due to missing header data or anti-piracy checks.

For legitimate play, use original cartridges or purchase digital titles via Nintendo eShop (3DS family only; DS eShop closed in 2023).
