Is Project M Officially Licensed by Nintendo?

No. Project M (and its successor Project+) is a **fan-made modification** of Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii). It is **not licensed, endorsed, or authorized by Nintendo, HAL Laboratory, Bandai Namco, or Sora Ltd.**

Legal Status

  • Copyright Infringement: Modifies copyrighted code/assets (characters, stages, music, engine) without permission.
  • DMCA Takedowns: Nintendo has issued DMCA notices to:
  1. Project M official website (shut down 2015).
  2. Hosting sites (MediaFire, Google Drive, GitHub repos).
  3. Tournament streams (EVO 2014+ removed PM; community runs own events).
  4. YouTube videos (Content ID claims on music/stages).
  • No Commercial Distribution: Cannot be sold. Distribution of the mod (ISO patcher, pre-patched ISO, SD card files) is legally actionable.

Playing It (Homebrew Required)

To play Project M / Project+ on hardware:

  1. Wii / Wii U (vWii) with **Homebrew Channel** (Letterbomb, Str2hax, Bluebomb).
  2. SD Card (2 GB max for original PM, 32 GB+ for Project+).
  3. Apply **Brawl ISO patch** (Riivolution / Gecko OS / USB Loader GX) or use **Project+ Netplay build** (Dolphin/Slippi).
  4. Original Brawl Disc / Digital Copy required (legal baseline).

Community Status

  • Project M (3.6 / 3.601): Development ceased 2015. "Final" version.
  • Project+ (Community continuation): Active updates (balance, stages, characters, netplay rollback). Current standard for competitive PM.
  • Slippi / Dolphin Netplay: Primary way played today (online rollback netcode).

Bottom Line: Passion project, legal gray area (tolerated but not licensed), requires homebrew. Nintendo protects IP aggressively — no official support ever.
