How to Capture Nintendo 64 Gameplay on MacBook Pro

You cannot connect N64 directly to a MacBook Pro—no HDMI in, no analog capture. You need a capture card + upscaler chain.

Required Hardware

  1. N64 → HDMI Converter
    • Eon Super 64 (plug-and-play, HDMI out, lag-free, $150).
    • RetroTINK 2X / 4K (S-Video/Component in → HDMI, best scaling, $100–250).
    • Cheap composite→HDMI ($15) – works but adds lag, poor deinterlacing.
  2. Capture Card (USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt)
    • Elgato Game Capture HD60 S / HD60 X (USB 3.0, 1080p60, Mac support).
    • AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus (USB 3.0, standalone mode).
    • Razer Ripsaw HD (USB 3.0).
  3. MacBook Pro (Thunderbolt 3/4 or USB-C → adapter if needed).

Connection Chain

N64 AV Out → [S-Video/Composite] → Upscaler (RetroTINK/Eon) → HDMI → Capture Card → USB-C → MacBook Pro

Software (macOS)

  • OBS Studio (free, open-source) – Add "Video Capture Device" → select Elgato/AVerMedia. Record/Stream.
  • Elgato Game Capture (Mac) – Official app, simpler UI.
  • QuickTime Player – File → New Movie Recording → select capture device (basic).

Audio

  • N64 stereo (red/white) → Upscaler HDMI embeds audio → Capture card captures both.
  • Or split: RCA → USB audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett) → Mac (cleaner).

Alternative: Emulation (Legal Gray Area)

  • Mupen64Plus / Rosalie's Mupen GUI / Parallel RDP – Native macOS, high accuracy.
  • RetroArch (Mupen64Plus-Next core) – Shaders, netplay, save states.
  • Requires dumped ROM (your cart + GBxCart RW / Retrode).

Cost Summary

  • Budget: Composite→HDMI ($15) + Generic USB 2.0 capture ($20) = $35 (laggy, 480i).
  • Quality: RetroTINK 2X ($100) + Elgato HD60 S ($150) = $250 (lag-free, 480p/1080p).
  • Best: Eon Super 64 ($150) + Elgato HD60 X ($200) = $350 (plug-and-play, 1080p60).

No direct N64→Mac. Upscaler + Capture Card = standard workflow.
