Using CodeBreaker for GBA Games on Nintendo DS: Hardware & Setup Guide

You can use CodeBreaker (or Action Replay) for GBA games on a Nintendo DS / DS Lite, but **not on DSi / 3DS** (no GBA slot).

Hardware Requirements

  • Console: Nintendo DS "Phat" (NTR-001) or DS Lite (USG-001). **Must have Slot-2 (GBA slot).**
  • Flashcart (Slot-1) + GBA Expansion (Slot-2) — *Standard Modern Method*:
    • Slot-1: R4i Gold 3DS+, Ace3DS X, R4i-SDHC (running **TWiLight Menu++** / **nds-bootstrap**).
    • Slot-2: EZ-Flash Omega / Omega Definitive Edition or EZ-Flash IV (legacy). This provides GBA ROM loading + RTC + Save patching + **Cheat Engine (.cht/.clt support)**.
  • Original CodeBreaker / Action Replay GBA Cart (Slot-2): Boot cart → Select cheats → "Start Game" → Swap for GBA game (hot-swap risky, not recommended).

Cheat File Formats

  • .cht (CodeBreaker) / .clt (CodeBreaker List) — Supported by EZ-Flash Omega kernel / TWiLight Menu++.
  • .xml (Action Replay) — Convert using cheat-converter tools.
  • .cht (EZ-Flash native) — Place in /cheats/ on SD card.

Step-by-Step (Modern Flashcart Setup)

  1. Install TWiLight Menu++ on Slot-1 flashcart SD.
  2. Insert EZ-Flash Omega in Slot-2.
  3. Put GBA ROMs (.gba) + Cheat files (.cht same filename) on Slot-1 SD (/roms/GBA/).
  4. Boot TWiLight Menu++ → Select GBA ROM → Press Y (or Menu) → "Cheats" → Enable desired codes → "Start Game."
  5. EZ-Flash Omega patches ROM on-the-fly with cheats → Boots via Slot-2.

Caveats

  • DSi / 3DS / 2DS: **No Slot-2 = No native GBA.** Only option: GBARunner2 (emulator on TWiLight Menu++). Cheat support in GBARunner2 is **experimental/limited** (RAW cheat engine, no .cht GUI).
  • Save Corruption: Always backup .sav before enabling cheats. Codes modifying inventory flags can brick saves.
  • Anti-Cheat: Some games (Pokémon Emerald Battle Frontier, Fire Emblem) detect cheats via checksum; use "Master Code" + "Must Be On" codes.
