Can You Put Games on a Memory Stick and Play Them on Nintendo DS?

No. The Nintendo DS/DS Lite only runs games from official Game Card cartridges (Slot-1). Memory sticks (SD, Memory Stick Duo, USB drives) cannot be used to boot games on stock hardware.

Why Not?

  • Slot-1 expects a proprietary cartridge bus; no mass-storage interface exists.
  • DSi/3DS added an SD slot, but it's only for DSiWare/photos/music—not for retail game cards.

What About Flash Carts?

Devices like R4, Acekard, DSTT, SuperCard DSTWO fit in Slot-1 and read microSD cards with ROMs. These are unauthorized and primarily used for piracy; they also violate Nintendo's Terms of Service and can brick your system if firmware updates conflict.

Legal Alternatives

  • Original cartridges (new/used).
  • Nintendo 3DS eShop / Virtual Console (for select DS titles on 3DS family).
  • NSO + Expansion Pack does not include DS games as of 2024.

Stick to legitimate cartridges or the 3DS eShop for a safe experience.
