Nintendo DSi: Key Features & Improvements Over DS Lite

The Nintendo DSi (2008–2009) was a major mid-generation refresh. Here's what made it special:

Hardware Upgrades

  • Larger Screens: 3.25" (vs. 3.0"), brighter, better viewing angles.
  • Dual Cameras: 0.3 MP front & rear—enabled photo apps, AR games, and profile pics.
  • SD Card Slot: External storage for photos, music (AAC), and DSiWare.
  • No GBA Slot: Removed backward compatibility with Game Boy Advance cartridges.
  • Slimmer Profile: 18.9 mm vs. 21.5 mm; matte finish resists fingerprints.

Software & Services

  • DSi Shop: Dedicated store for DSiWare (exclusive games, apps, clocks, calculators). Points purchased via Nintendo Points cards.
  • Internet Browser: Opera-based; slow by modern standards but functional for basic sites.
  • DSi Sound: Audio player with pitch/speed controls, voice recording, and visualizers.
  • DSi Camera: Photo editing, lenses (mirror, kaleidoscope), and face recognition minigames.
  • System Transfer: Move DSiWare to another DSi or later 3DS (one-way, limited times).

Summary of Exclusives

  • DSiWare titles (e.g., Art Style: PiCTOBiTS, Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again, WarioWare: Snapped!).
  • Camera/AR games (Face Training, Monster Finder).
  • Enhanced DS titles with DSi features (e.g., Pokémon Black/White camera connectivity).

The DSi bridged the DS and 3DS eras, introducing digital distribution, cameras, and an app-centric approach that defined Nintendo's future handheld strategy.
