Nintendo DS Lite Backward Compatibility: Yes, Plays Game Boy Advance Games

Yes. The Nintendo DS Lite (and original DS) plays Game Boy Advance cartridges natively via Slot-2 (bottom).

How It Works

  • Insert GBA cartridge (label facing back) into Slot-2 until click.
  • Power on → Select "Start GBA Game" from DS main menu (or auto-boots).
  • Top screen displays GBA (240×160) centered; bottom screen off.
  • L/R buttons map to GBA L/R. DS mic unused.

Limitations

  • No Game Boy / Game Boy Color support. Hardware lacks Z80 co-processor (present in GBA).
  • No Link Cable / Multiplayer. DS has no GBA link port; wireless not supported for GBA titles.
  • No Rumble / Tilt / Solar Sensor. Games using these (e.g., Drill Dozer, WarioWare: Twisted!, Boktai) lose features.
  • Sleep Mode: Closing lid does not sleep GBA game (DS sleep only works for DS mode).
  • DSi / DSi XL / 3DS / 2DS: Removed Slot-2. Cannot play GBA carts natively. Use CFW + GBARunner2 or open_agb_firm for near-native GBA on 3DS/DSi.

Best GBA Games to Play on DS Lite

  • Advance Wars 1+2, Fire Emblem, Golden Sun 1+2, Metroid Fusion/Zero Mission, Castlevania: Aria/Dawn of Sorrow, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Pokemon Emerald/FR/LG, Minish Cap, Rhythm Tengoku (JP).

Tip: DS Lite's brighter screen (4-level) makes GBA games look better than on original GBA/SP. Keep a GBA cart in Slot-2 for instant access.
