You cannot insert a Game Boy Color cartridge into a Nintendo DS. The slots are physically and electrically incompatible:
| Method | Hardware Needed | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flashcart (EZ-Flash Omega, EZ-Flash Jr, EverDrive GBA X5) | Flashcart + microSD (insert in Slot-2) | Real hardware, perfect accuracy, save states, RTC, cheats. Works DS/DSi/3DS. | $40–$80. Requires Slot-2 (no DSi/3DS XL without adapter). |
| DSi/3DS CFW + TWiLight Menu++ | CFW (Unlaunch/HiyaCFW/Luma3DS) | No extra hardware. Runs GB/GBC/GBA/NDS from SD. Menu integration. | Requires hacking (easy, free). DSi/3DS only. |
| Emulator on PC/Phone (mGBA, Gambatte, SameBoy) | Any modern device | Free, upscaling, shaders, save states, netplay. | Not on original hardware. |
| Game Boy Color / GBA SP / Game Boy Micro | Original hardware | Authentic experience, link cable, original screen. | Screen quality (non-backlit GBC), battery, cost. |
Downloading ROMs you don't own = piracy. Dump your own carts via GBxCart RW ($40) or Arduino + cartridge reader (DIY). Flashcarts are legal hardware; content is your responsibility.
