DS Game Saves on DSi: Not Compatible—Start Fresh

Original DS (.sav) save files do not work on DSi. Different encryption, filesystem, and NAND layout.

Why They're Incompatible

• Encryption Key: DSi uses per-console unique key (derived from console ID). DS Phat/Lite uses shared key.
• Filesystem: DSi saves to NAND /title/00030004/XXXXXXXX/data/; DS saves to cartridge EEPROM/Flash.
• Header Signing: DSi requires RSA-signed save headers; DS saves lack this.

What You Can Try (Long Shots)

• DS Download Play Transfer: Some games (Pokémon DPPt/HGSS, Animal Crossing WW) support "Send Save to Wii/DSi" via DS Download Play. Check manual.
• Homebrew (CFW DSi): TWiLight Menu++ + GodMode9i can inject raw .sav → DSi save, but must resign with console key. Complex, risky.
• Action Replay DS / Powersaves: Can backup/restore DS saves to PC, but DSi cannot read AR-restored saves on cartridge.

Reality

Start a new game. DSi-enhanced titles (black cart) often have DSi-exclusive content (camera, shop) making fresh play worthwhile.
