Can You Connect Nintendo DS to Game Boy Advance SP for Pokémon Pearl/Emerald?

No direct connection exists. The Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance SP **cannot link** for multiplayer, trading, or data transfer between Pokémon Pearl (DS) and Emerald (GBA).

Why

  • Different Hardware: DS uses **Wireless (802.11b)** for local multiplayer. GBA SP uses **Serial Link Cable (wired)** or **Wireless Adapter (802.11b, but proprietary protocol)**.
  • Incompatible Protocols: DS wireless and GBA Wireless Adapter **do not speak the same language**. They cannot see each other.
  • Slot-2 Limitation: DS has a GBA cartridge slot (Slot-2), but it **only runs GBA code in GBA mode** (single-screen, no DS features). In GBA mode, the DS *is* a GBA — it can link to another GBA/SP via Link Cable or Wireless Adapter, but **cannot simultaneously run DS software (Pearl)**.

How to Transfer Pokémon (Gen 3 → Gen 4)

This is **one-way migration** (Pal Park), not two-way trade:

  1. Insert Pokémon Emerald (GBA cart) into **DS Slot-2**.
  2. Insert Pokémon Pearl (DS cart) into **DS Slot-1**.
  3. Boot Pearl. At main menu, select **"Migrate from Emerald"** (requires 6 Pokémon in Emerald PC Box, no HM moves, no held items).
  4. Select 6 Pokémon → Transfer → Catch them in **Pal Park** (Route 221, after National Dex).
  5. Original Emerald cart retains its save. You can migrate again (6 at a time).

What You Need

  • **Nintendo DS or DS Lite** (DSi/3DS **lack Slot-2** — cannot migrate directly).
  • Both cartridges (legit or flashcart with proper save).
  • National Dex in Pearl (see all 150 Sinnoh Pokémon).

Trading Between Two DS Games

  • Use **DS Wireless Communication** (Union Room in Pokémon Center). No internet needed. Works DS↔DS, DS↔DSi, DS↔3DS.

Summary: No link cable between DS and GBA SP. Use **DS/DS Lite Slot-2** for one-way Gen 3→4 migration. Trade Gen 4↔4 via DS wireless.
