Cutting a Game Boy Color Cartridge for GBA Slot on DS: Don't Do It – Hardware Incompatibility
Hardware Incompatibility – Destructive & Useless
Physically modifying a Game Boy Color cartridge to fit a DS Slot-2 (GBA) will not work and destroys the cart.
Why It Fails
Different Bus: GBC uses 8-bit Sharp LR35902 (Z80-like); GBA uses 32-bit ARM7TDMI. Voltage, timing, pinout differ.
No Backward Compatibility in Slot-2: DS Slot-2 runs only GBA games. GBC games require the original GBC/GBA hardware (GBA plays GBC via hardware switch).
Physical Damage: Cutting the shell severs traces, cracks ROM/ROM/RAM chips.
Safe Ways to Play GBC on DS/3DS
Flashcart (EZ-Flash Omega, EverDrive GBA X5): Load GBC ROMs via emulator (Goomba Color) on GBA slot.
3DS Virtual Console: Official GBC titles on eShop (closed 2023; installed titles remain).
Homebrew (GBARunner2 on DS/DSi, Lameboy on DS): Software emulation.
Original Hardware: Game Boy Color / Advance SP / Micro – cheap, authentic.
Preserve your cartridges; use flashcarts or emulation.
