Gakuen Alice DS in English: Why It Doesn't Exist and What Your Options Are

There is no official English release of Gakuen Alice on Nintendo DS. Two Japanese titles launched—Gakuen Alice: Kira Kira Memory Kiss (2006) and Gakuen Alice: Waku Waku Happy Friends (2007)—but neither was localized by publisher Bandai Namco or any Western partner.

Fan Translation Status

Despite a dedicated fanbase, no complete, widely recognized fan translation patch exists for either DS game. Partial menu translations circulate on forums like GBAtemp and Romhacking.net, but they're incomplete, unmaintained, and often break event triggers or text rendering. Playing through with machine translation (Google Lens, RetroArch AI service) is possible but clumsy.

Why It Never Came West

• Licensing Complexity: Gakuen Alice (Alice Academy) is a Hakusensha manga/anime property. International rights for games are separate from anime streaming rights.
• Niche Appeal: Shoujo manga-based DS games were considered high-risk for Western publishers in the mid-2000s.
• DS Lifecycle: By the time the second game released (2007), publishers were shifting focus to 3DS/PSP.

Your Options

1. Play the Japanese Version with Guides: Use a walkthrough (GameFAQs, Japanese wikis translated via browser) to navigate menus and story beats. The gameplay—minigames, relationship building, stat management—is playable without full literacy.
2. Watch a Let's Play: YouTube has full Japanese playthroughs with English commentary/summaries.
3. Read the Manga/Watch the Anime: The story is fully available in English (Viz Media manga, various anime streams). The games are side stories.
4. Emulation + AI Translation: RetroArch's AI Service (Google Translate / ZTranslate) overlays machine-translated text in real-time. Imperfect but functional for menus and dialogue.

Bottom Line

You cannot play Gakuen Alice on DS in English officially. The franchise remains a Japan-exclusive curiosity. If the IP matters to you, the manga and anime are the definitive English experiences.
