Your DS won't read cartridges. Before assuming the console is dead, work through these steps systematically. Most reading issues are fixable at home.
Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Gently wipe the gold pins on the cartridge's bottom edge. Remove dust, oils, and oxidation. No liquids, no erasers, no metal polish. A cotton swab lightly dampened with 99% isopropyl alcohol works for stubborn grime—let dry fully (2+ minutes) before inserting.
Check for visible damage: deep scratches on contacts, cracked plastic, bent or missing pins inside the cartridge shell. Test the suspect game in another DS/3DS. If it fails there too, the cartridge is dead.
Insert a cartridge you're certain works. If it reads, your console is fine—the first game is faulty. If multiple games fail, the console is the issue.
Full shutdown: hold Power 4+ seconds until screens go black. Wait 30 seconds. Power on. Clears temporary software glitches.
Remove and re-insert the cartridge 3-5 times. The mechanical action can scrape light oxidation off both cartridge and slot contacts.
Use compressed air (short bursts, upright can) to blow out dust. Follow with a dry microfiber cloth wrapped around a thin plastic card (old credit card) gently swiped through the slot. No liquids, no cotton swabs deep inside—fibers snag on pins.
Confirms whether your games work elsewhere. If they do, your console's reader is the problem.
Hold Power + L + R simultaneously for 10+ seconds. Forces a full hardware reset, clearing deeper software states than a normal power cycle.
Risk of damage. Only if above failed.
Bent pins or liquid damage can permanently kill the reader. If unsure, stop here.
If nothing works, the cartridge reader's pins are likely bent, fractured, or the reader PCB has failed. Repair shops ($40-80) can replace the reader module. For DS Lite/DSi/3DS, this requires significant disassembly. Weigh repair cost vs. replacement console price ($50-100 used).
Still stuck? A repair technician with microsoldering equipment is your last resort.
