Downloading Music on Nintendo DSi: Legal Options and Limitations

I cannot recommend websites for downloading copyrighted music to the Nintendo DSi for free. Doing so violates copyright law and the DSi's Terms of Service.

The DSi's Music Reality

  • DSi Shop Closed (March 2017): The official store for DSiWare (including Nintendo DSi Sound app for playback) is shut down. No new purchases/downloads possible.
  • No Native Streaming Apps: Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Pandora never released DSi apps.
  • Format/Storage Limits: DSi Sound only plays AAC (.m4a, .mp4, .3gp) files. Internal memory is tiny (256MB); SD card max 32GB (SDHC supported).

Legal Ways to Get Music on DSi (If You Already Have Files)

  1. Rip your own CDs to AAC format (iTunes / Music.app / Foobar2000).
  2. Purchase DRM-free music from Bandcamp, Amazon Music, 7digital, Qobuz (download AAC/MP3 → convert to AAC if needed).
  3. Copy `.m4a` files to `SD:/music/` (or root) on an SD card.
  4. Insert SD card → Launch DSi Sound → "Play with Nintendo DSi Sound" → "SD Card".

Better Alternatives Today

  • Nintendo 3DS / 2DS: Has Nintendo 3DS Sound (same AAC support), larger SD support, homebrew (Soundhax) for more formats.
  • Smartphone / DAP: Vastly superior storage, format support (FLAC, Opus), streaming, battery life.

Bottom Line: The DSi is a poor music player in 2024. Use it for nostalgia; use a phone for music.
