Nintendo 3DS Trade-In: No Official Nintendo Program

Nintendo does not run a direct trade-in program where you send an old DS/3DS to them for a discount on a new system.

Retailer Trade-In Programs (Current)

RetailerTypical 3DS/2DS Trade Value (Cash/Store Credit)Notes
GameStop$15–$45Varies by model (3DS XL, New 3DS XL, 2DS), condition, promo. Credit > cash.
Best Buy$20–$50Gift card. Runs promos ("extra $50 toward Switch").
Amazon Trade-In$10–$40Gift card. Must match exact SKU condition.
Back Market / Decluttr / BuyBackWorld$30–$70Mail-in, PayPal/direct deposit. Often higher than big-box.
Local Game StoresVariesNegotiable. Test on site.

Nintendo's Official Upgrade Path

  • Nintendo Switch / Switch Lite / OLED: No backward compatibility with DS/3DS cartridges.
  • Nintendo eShop (3DS/Wii U): Closed March 27, 2023. No new purchases. Redownloads still work for owned titles.
  • Nintendo Switch Online: Includes NES, SNES, GB, GBC, N64, GBA, Genesis libraries—not DS/3DS games.

Best Value Strategy

  1. Sell privately (eBay, Swappa, Facebook Marketplace, r/GameSale) — 30–50% more than trade-in.
  2. Keep the 3DS for homebrew (Custom Firmware / Luma3DS) — plays backups, emulators, DS games, cheats, themes. Best long-term value.
  3. Trade during promo (e.g., GameStop "extra $50 toward Switch") if you want instant credit and hate selling.

No Nintendo-sponsored discount exists. Retailer trade-ins are your only official path—and selling yourself pays more.
