Nintendo Game Boy Advance Game Production Ended in 2005

Nintendo ceased first-party Game Boy Advance game production in 2005. The final first-party release was WarioWare: Twisted! (JP: Oct 2004, NA: May 2005, EU: June 2005). A handful of third-party titles trickled out until ~2007 (e.g., Final Fantasy VI Advance EU 2007), but Nintendo itself stopped manufacturing cartridges and publishing new GBA software after 2005.

Timeline

  • 2001: GBA launch (Japan Mar, NA Jun).
  • 2003: GBA SP launch.
  • 2004: Nintendo DS launch — Nintendo shifts focus.
  • 2005: Last Nintendo-published GBA game (WarioWare: Twisted!).
  • 2006: GBA hardware production ends (Japan May, WW later).
  • 2007: Final third-party localizations.

Homebrew & Aftermarket Scene

Active communities still release new games on physical cartridges via:

  • GB Studio (drag-and-drop game maker) → flashcart or reproduction cart.
  • itch.io "GBA" tag – dozens of free/paid homebrew ROMs yearly.
  • Limited Run Games, Strictly Limited, etc. – occasional physical runs of homebrew (e.g., Goodboy Galaxy, Astro Man).

These are unofficial, but they keep the platform alive.
