Do Nintendogs Disappear If You Play Too Long? No.

Your Nintendogs never disappear, run away, or die. They are permanent save-file residents. You can neglect them for years — they'll be waiting (hungry, dirty, bored).

What Happens With Long Play / Neglect

  • Needs Decay: Hunger, Thirst, Hygiene, Affection drop over real time (even in sleep mode).
  • Behavior Changes: Ignored dogs: whine, refuse tricks, won't compete, lose contest stats.
  • No Penalty Beyond Mood: No health loss, no death, no deletion. Feed, wash, pet → full recovery in 1 session.
  • Competition Eligibility: Low affection = can't enter Disc/Obedience/Agility trials.

Vacation Mode (Built-In)

  • Hotel (Go Out → Hotel) — costs $10/day. Dog stays happy, clean, fed. Infinite days.
  • Or: Just don't play. Come back → care for 5 min → back to max.

Technical Limits

  • Save Corruption: Only way to "lose" dogs. Backup save via SD card (DSi/3DS) or Flashcart (DS).
  • Cart Battery: DS carts use Flash memory — no battery. Saves last decades.

Play as much or as little as you want. Your virtual pups are immortal.
