Downloading Games on Nintendo 3DS XL – How It Works

The 3DS XL primarily uses physical cartridges. However, the Nintendo eShop (discontinued March 2023) offered:

• Digital versions of retail games (same content as cartridge).
• eShop-exclusive titles (Pushmo, Dillon’s Rolling Western, etc.).
• Virtual Console (NES, GB, GBC, GBA, N64, DS via Wii U transfer).
• DLC and free-to-play (Pokémon Picross, Rusty’s Real Deal Baseball).

Post-eShop closure: You can still re-download previously purchased titles via “Redownload” in the eShop app (requires internet & NNID). New purchases are impossible. For new games, buy physical cartridges or consider a Switch (full eShop access).
