Making Your Nintendog Lie Down Longer in Nintendogs + Cats

In Nintendogs + Cats, the "Lie Down" command has a hard-coded duration of about 5 seconds. You cannot extend this through settings, items, or cheats—it's a fixed animation timer. However, there are creative workarounds to keep your pup in a down position longer.

Workarounds for a Longer "Down"

  • Repeat the Command: As soon as your dog stands up, say "Lie Down" again. With practice, you can chain these nearly seamlessly.
  • Reward with Treats: Give a treat immediately after the dog lies down. Positive reinforcement makes the dog more responsive to repeated commands.
  • Teach Related Tricks: "Stay" and "Roll Over" both involve the dog staying low for longer animations. "Stay" in particular keeps the dog in a down position until released.

Why the Limit Exists

The 5-second cap is likely a design choice to keep interactions snappy and prevent the game from feeling like a "wait simulator." The developers wanted players to actively engage with their pets, not just stare at a sleeping dog.

While you can't force a prolonged nap, these tricks let you create cute moments for photos or just enjoy your virtual companion's obedience.
