Changing the Time in Nintendogs: How It Works

You cannot change the time inside Nintendogs. The game reads the system clock of your Nintendo DS/3DS directly.

Why This Design?

  • Real-time mechanics: Feeding, walks, contests, and puppy sleep cycles sync to actual time of day.
  • Prevents time-travel exploits (skipping ahead for rewards).
  • Encourages daily check-in habit—the core gameplay loop.

What You Can Do

  • Change System Clock: DS/3DS System Settings → Date/Time. Warning: This affects all games (Animal Crossing, Pokémon events, Play Coins, StreetPass).
  • Play at Different Real Times: Morning/evening/late night sessions yield different lighting, contest schedules, and dog energy levels.
  • Use "Bark Mode" (DS) / StreetPass (3DS): Passive interactions happen in sleep mode regardless of active play time.

Time-Sensitive Events

  • Disc Competitions: Specific days/times per cup.
  • Fireworks: Summer evenings (real-world season).
  • Puppy Growth: Takes ~3 real weeks to reach adult size.

Embrace the real-time design—it's what makes Nintendogs feel alive. If you need schedule flexibility, consider Nintendogs + Cats on 3DS, which added a "Skip Day" feature for certain activities (via Play Coins).
