Playing GBA Games on Nintendo DSi via SD Card

You cannot natively play Game Boy Advance (GBA) games from an SD card on a stock Nintendo DSi. The DSi removed the GBA cartridge slot (Slot-2) present on the DS Phat and DS Lite. It lacks the physical interface, voltage regulation, and clock speed to run GBA code natively.

Workarounds (Require Modification)

Option A: Slot-1 Flashcart (Easiest Entry)

• Devices: R4i Gold 3DS Plus, Ace3DS X, R4i-SDHC 3DS RTS (buy from nds-card.com or ModChipsDirect — avoid Amazon fakes).
• How: Flashcart plugs into DS Game Slot (Slot-1). Runs homebrew menu (Wood, YSMenu). Launch GBARunner2 (best GBA emulator on DS hardware) → Loads .gba ROMs from SD card.
• Compatibility: ~90%+. No RTC (real-time clock) for Pokémon berry growth, some Mode 7 scaling issues. DSTWO (discontinued, has onboard CPU) had better compat but kills battery.

Option B: Custom Firmware — HiyaCFW + Unlaunch (Modern Best)

• Prereqs: DSi on firmware 1.4.5 (all regions) or lower. PC + SD card reader. Exploit: Memory Pit (DSi Camera app) or Flipnote Lenny (Flipnote Studio).
• Process: Follow dsi.cfw.guide exactly. Installs Unlaunch (bootloader) + HiyaCFW (custom firmware).
• Result: GBARunner2 appears as a DSi Menu icon. Launch directly from SD card. No flashcart needed. Best battery life, cleanest UI.

Option C: DSiWare (Official, Extremely Limited)

• Nintendo officially ported a handful of GBA games as DSiWare: Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Dr. Mario Express, Birds & Beans, Paper Airplane Chase.
• DSi Shop closed 2017. Only playable if you purchased/downloaded before closure (redownload via Nintendo eShop on 3DS if linked NNID).

Recommendation
