Nintendo DS Games: Development Has Ended, But the Library Lives On

Nintendo has already stopped making DS games. The last first-party DS title was Kirby Mass Attack (NA: September 2011). Hardware production ended in 2013 (DSi) and 2014 (DS Lite).

Current Reality

• eShop (DSi/3DS): Closed March 27, 2023. No new purchases; redownloads still work for owned titles.
• Physical Cartridges: New old stock exists; no new manufacturing.
• Third-Party: Effectively zero new DS releases since ~2014 (last: Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! 2014).

Why It's Over

• 3DS succeeded DS (2011); Switch succeeded 3DS (2017).
• DS architecture (ARM9/ARM7, 4 MB RAM) cannot support modern engines/middleware.
• Install base migrated; ROI for new carts is negative.

Preservation

• Homebrew (TWiLight Menu++, nds-bootstrap) plays backups on 3DS/DSi.
• Flashcarts (R4i Gold 3DS Plus, Ace3DS X) for original hardware.
• Emulation: melonDS (PC), Drastic (Android), iNDS (iOS).

The DS library (2,000+ games) is complete. Enjoy what exists—it's one of history's greatest handheld lineups.
