Playing Nintendo DS Games on TV – Methods & Legality

You cannot directly connect a Nintendo DS/DSi/3DS to a TV. No video-out hardware exists on any DS-family handheld.

Legal Ways to Play DS Games on a TV

1. Nintendo 3DS Family + Capture Card (Hardware Mod)

  • Install internal capture card (e.g., Merki, Loopy, 3DS Capture) – requires soldering / professional install ($150–$300)
  • Outputs HDMI → TV/monitor. Zero latency. Plays DS + 3DS carts.
  • Legal: You own hardware + carts.

2. Wii U Virtual Console (Discontinued)

  • Select DS titles were re-released on Wii U eShop (Mario Kart DS, Advance Wars, Brain Age, Dr. Kawashima, WarioWare Touched, Yoshi's Island DS, etc.)
  • eShop closed March 2023 – cannot buy new. Only if previously purchased.
  • Plays on TV via Wii U GamePad/TV mirroring.

3. Nintendo Switch – Zero DS Support

  • No DS backward compatibility. No Virtual Console for DS.
  • Only remakes/ports: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, New Super Mario Bros. U, Pokémon Scarlet/Violet (new games)

Emulation (Legal Gray Area)

melonDS / DeSmuME / RetroArch (PC) → HDMI to TV.

  • Legal only if: You dump your own BIOS (firmware) + game carts (using a DS/3DS + homebrew)
  • Downloading ROMs/BIOS you don't own = piracy
  • Best experience: melonDS (high accuracy, upscaling, netplay)

What About "DS TV Adapter" Listings?

Scams. No such accessory exists. Some show modded DS units with capture cards pre-installed – verify seller reputation.

Recommendation

  1. Own a 3DS/2DS? → Play handheld (best experience – dual screen intended)
  2. Want TV + legal? → Hunt for Wii U + pre-owned DS VC titles (rare)
  3. Want TV + own carts? → Professional capture card install on 3DS
  4. Just want to play? → melonDS on PC + HDMI to TV (dump your own carts)
