Why Is It Called Nintendo? — "Leave Luck to Heaven" from Hanafuda Card Origins

The name Nintendo (任天堂) comes from three Japanese kanji:

  • 任 — "duty," "responsibility," or "to entrust"
  • 天 — "heaven," "sky"
  • 堂 — "hall," "temple," "establishment"

Common interpretation: "Leave luck to heaven" or "Temple of free hanafuda"—referencing the company's origins in 1889 as Nintendo Koppai, a handmade hanafuda (flower card) playing card shop founded by Fusajiro Yamauchi.

Evolution

  • 1889: Nintendo Koppai (cards)
  • 1950s–60s: Diversified into toys, love hotels, taxi, instant rice
  • 1970s: Arcade games (EV, Donkey Kong)
  • 1983: Family Computer (Famicom) → Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

The name endured from a card shop to a global entertainment giant—still "leaving luck to heaven" after 130+ years.
