Can Two Players Play Borderlands Split-Screen Online on the Same Console?

No. The Borderlands series (1, 2, The Pre-Sequel, 3) supports local split-screen co-op (2 players) only in offline mode. You cannot take a split-screen party into online matchmaking or join an online session together from one console.

Why?

  • Each online player requires a unique platform account (SHiFT/Steam/PSN/Xbox Live) and a separate game license.
  • Engine/network architecture ties one player instance to one authenticated session.

How to Play Co-op Online

  • Each player needs their own console/PC, own copy of the game, and own online subscription (Xbox Live Gold / PS Plus / Nintendo Switch Online — not required on PC/Steam).
  • Host invites friend via in-game menu or platform friends list.

Split-Screen Still Works For

  • Offline campaign, side missions, DLC, arena fights.
  • Local LAN (System Link on consoles) if both consoles are on same network.

Note: Borderlands 3 added 3/4-player split-screen on next-gen consoles (PS5/Xbox Series X), but still offline only.
