The Sims Online: Shut Down 2008, Current Multiplayer Alternatives

No. The Sims Online (EA Maxis, 2002) was officially shut down August 1, 2008 (EA Land beta closed 2009).

Current Official Multiplayer Sims Experiences

  • The Sims 4 (PC/Console): Limited to Gallery Sharing (households, lots, rooms) and Neighborhood Stories (NPC autonomy). No real-time co-op
  • The Sims FreePlay (iOS/Android): Free-to-play, real-time, social features (visit neighbors, compete). Single-player core
  • The Sims Mobile (iOS/Android): Similar to FreePlay, legacy events, social clubs

Community Projects (PC Only)

  • The Sims 2/3/4 Multiplayer Mods: Experimental (e.g., Sims 4 Multiplayer Mod by scumbumbo/polysics). Require same version/mods. Unstable
  • Project Dollhouse / FreeSO: Open-source The Sims Online server emulators. Playable but incomplete; legal gray area

For true shared-household gameplay: The Sims 4 with mods or waiting for Project Rene (next gen) are the only paths.
