Can't Find a Downloaded Game? Step-by-Step Guide to Locate It on Any Platform

Downloaded a game but can't find it? The file is almost certainly on your device—just not where you expect. Follow this platform-by-platform checklist.

First: Answer These to Narrow the Search

  • Source: Steam? Epic? GOG? Xbox/PlayStation Store? Browser download? Torrent? Email attachment?
  • Exact Game Title: Search your system for this string.
  • Operating System: Windows 10/11, macOS, Linux, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch?
  • What You've Tried: Checked Downloads folder? System search? Library app "Installed" tab?
  • Error Messages: Any pop-ups during/after download? "Corrupt," "Missing executable," "Path too long"?

Platform-Specific Fixes

Windows (Steam / Epic / GOG / Standalone)

  • Default Downloads: C:\Users\[Name]\Downloads
  • Steam: Library → Right-click game → Manage → Browse local files. Or: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\[Game]
  • Epic Games: Library → Three dots → Manage → Open Install Location. Default: C:\Program Files\Epic Games\[Game]
  • GOG Galaxy: Game → Manage Installation → Show Folder. Default: C:\GOG Games\[Game]
  • Microsoft Store / Xbox App (PC): C:\Program Files\WindowsApps (hidden, restricted). Use Xbox App → "Open File Location" instead.
  • Standalone Installers: Check AppData\Local\[Developer]\[Game] or Program Files\[Developer]\[Game].
  • System Search: Press Win+Q, type game name. Filter "Apps" or "Documents."

macOS

  • Downloads: ~/Downloads (Cmd+Shift+D in Finder).
  • Applications: /Applications or ~/Applications.
  • Steam/Epic/GOG: Same as Windows—use client's "Show in Finder."
  • Browser Downloads: Safari: Cmd+Option+L. Chrome: Cmd+Shift+J.

Linux

  • Steam: ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/ or ~/.local/share/Steam/
  • Lutris/Bottles/Heroic: Check each app's "Game Directory" setting.
  • Flatpak: ~/.var/app/[com.game.ID]/data/
  • Find Command: find / -name "*gamename*" 2>/dev/null | head -20

Consoles (Xbox / PlayStation / Switch)

  • Xbox: My Games & Apps → Full Library → All Owned Games → "Ready to Install" (if not installed) or "Installed" (if it is).
  • PlayStation: Game Library → Purchased → Filter "Not Installed" or "Installed."
  • Switch: eShop → Profile Icon → Redownload. Or Home → Software icon (if installed).

Browser Downloads (Any OS)

  • Chrome/Edge: Ctrl+J (Win) / Cmd+Shift+J (Mac) → Downloads history.
  • Firefox: Ctrl+Shift+Y / Cmd+Shift+Y.
  • Safari: Cmd+Option+L.
