Can You Play Nintendo DS Games Online with Friends in Different Cities? No—Here's Why and What Works Instead

No. The Nintendo DS does not support direct online multiplayer across distances for the vast majority of its library. Its wireless hardware (802.11b, 2 Mbps max) was designed for local ad-hoc play only (same room, ~30 ft range).

Why Online Play Isn't Feasible on Original DS

  • Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (WFC) Shut Down 2014: The official matchmaking service for ~50 DS games (Mario Kart DS, Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, Animal Crossing: Wild World, Tetris DS) is dead. Private servers (Wiimmfi) restore some games but require homebrew setup.
  • No Universal Friend System: No cross-game friend list, no voice chat, no party system. Each game implemented its own friend code exchange.
  • Peer-to-Peer Architecture: WFC matched players, but traffic flowed directly between consoles. High latency over distance caused desyncs, lag, disconnects.
  • Local-First Design: New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart DS, Pokémon trading/battling—all built for couch play.

What Still Works Locally

  • Local Wireless (Ad-Hoc): 2-16 players, same room, no internet needed. Works perfectly on DS, DS Lite, DSi, 3DS, 2DS.
  • DS Download Play: One cartridge hosts, others download temporary client. Single-card multiplayer for supported titles.

Modern Alternatives for Online Play

  • Nintendo 3DS / 2DS: Same local wireless + some titles had WFC (also dead, Wiimmfi restores). Monster Hunter 4U, Pokémon XY/ORAS/SM/USUM, Smash 3DS have active Wiimmfi communities.
  • Nintendo Switch: Native online (Nintendo Switch Online required), friend system, voice chat app, massive library.
  • PC / Mobile: Emulators (melonDS, DeSmuME) with netplay mods exist but require technical setup, legal ROM ownership, and tolerant friends.
  • DS Games With Wiimmfi Support (Partial List): Mario Kart DS, Pokémon Gen 4/5, Animal Crossing: Wild World, Tetris DS, Metroid Prime Hunters, GoldenEye 007 (homebrew).

Wiimmfi Setup (If You're Determined)

  1. Modded 3DS (custom firmware) or Wii (Homebrew Channel).
  2. Install Wiimmfi patcher (auto-patches DNS on game boot).
  3. Exchange Friend Codes with friends (still per-game).
  4. Play.

For true, easy online play today: upgrade to a 3DS or Switch. The DS era of online gaming is history.
