Legal Ways to Download ESA-Protected Games

ESA (Entertainment Software Association) represents major publishers; "ESA-protected" means actively enforced copyright. Downloading without authorization is illegal.

Legal Acquisition Channels

  • Official Storefronts: Steam, Epic, GOG, PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Nintendo eShop, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, EA App.
  • Subscription Services: Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, EA Play, Ubisoft+, Apple Arcade — access while subscribed.
  • DRM-Free: GOG.com, itch.io (indie), Humble Bundle (some).
  • Physical → Digital: Rip your own carts/discs (format-shift) — legal gray area; US DMCA allows for archival if you own original, but circumventing DRM is illegal.
  • Abandonware? No legal category. Rights persist until 70–95 years after publication. Some publishers release freeware (e.g., Battlefield 2, SimCity 2000 on Origin) — only those are legal.

Risks of "Free Download" Sites

  • Malware, ransomware, credential theft.
  • ISP copyright notices → fines / service termination.
  • Account bans on Steam/PSN/Xbox if linked.
