PS3 Backward Compatibility with PS2 Games: Complete Model-by-Model Guide

Only specific PS3 models can play PS2 games. Backward compatibility was removed in later hardware revisions.

Compatible Models (PS2 Hardware-Based)

  • Launch "Fat" Models (2006): CECHAxx (60 GB, NTSC), CECHBxx (20 GB, NTSC), CECHCxx (60 GB, PAL), CECHExx (80 GB, NTSC)
  • These contain the actual PS2 Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer chips for native compatibility.

Partially Compatible Models (Software Emulation)

  • Early 80 GB Models: CECHExx (MotorStorm bundle), CECHGxx (40 GB, PAL), CECHHxx (40 GB, NTSC)
  • Use software emulation—covers ~70-80% of PS2 library, but with graphical glitches, sound issues, or crashes in some titles.

Incompatible Models (No PS2 Support)

  • All "Slim" Models: CECH-20xx, CECH-21xx, CECH-25xx, CECH-30xx, CECH-40xx, CECH-42xx, CECH-43xx
  • All "Super Slim" Models: CECH-42xx and later
  • These lack both PS2 hardware and software emulation.

How to Identify Your Model

Check the model number on the back of the console (starts with "CECH"). If the number after CECH- is less than 2000 (e.g., CECHA01, CECHC04), it has hardware backward compatibility.

Important Notes

  • PS2 games must be purchased separately—none come pre-installed.
  • Even on compatible models, some games have issues (progressive scan, memory card emulation, specific engine quirks).
  • PS1 games work on all PS3 models via software emulation.
  • For incompatible models, consider a used PS2 ($30-60) or PS2 Classics on PSN (limited selection).
