PS3 Controller: The PS Button Location and Function (And What AOSS Actually Is)

The "PS Button" is the large circular button with the PlayStation logo in the center of the DualShock 3 / Sixaxis controller. There is no "AOSS" button on the PS3 or its controller.

PS Button Functions

  • Turn On Console: Press when PS3 is off/standby.
  • Open XMB (Cross Media Bar): Press during gameplay/game to access system menu.
  • Controller Pairing: Hold during Bluetooth pairing process.
  • Access Controller Settings: Hold in-game → "Controller Settings" (battery, vibration, reassign).
  • Quit Game/App: Hold → "Quit Game" confirmation.

What Is AOSS?

AOSS (AirStation One-Touch Secure System) is a Buffalo Technology feature for Wi-Fi router WPS-style push-button setup. It is not a PlayStation feature. Some routers have an AOSS button; the PS3 connects via standard WPS or manual Wi-Fi setup.

PS3 Wi-Fi Setup (No AOSS Needed)

  1. Settings → Network Settings → Internet Connection Settings
  2. Select "Easy" → "Wireless" → "Scan" → Choose your SSID
  3. Enter password (WPA/WPA2-PSK)
  4. Test connection

If your router has an AOSS button, you can use it during the "Wireless" setup by selecting "AOSS" instead of "Scan," but this is a router feature, not a PS3 button.
