PS3 Backwards Compatibility: PS2 and PS1 Support by Model

PS3 Backwards Compatibility Breakdown

The PS3's backwards compatibility is model-dependent and incomplete.

PS2 Games

  • Launch "Fat" Models (CECHA/B/C/E — 20/60/80 GB): Hardware Emotion Engine + GS chip → ~98% compatibility.
  • Later Fat (CECHG/H/K — 40/80 GB): Software emulation only → ~70% compatibility, many glitches.
  • All Slim / Super Slim: No PS2 support (hardware removed).
  • Check Model: Label on back: CECHA/B/C/E = hardware BC. CECHG+ = software/none.
  • No Official List: Sony never published a full compatibility list; community wikis (PS2 Classics Placeholder, PS3HEN) track working titles.

PS1 Games

  • All PS3 models play PS1 discs via software emulation (~99.9% compatibility).
  • Save data uses virtual memory cards (assigned per game).
  • PS1 Classics from PS Store also work on all models.

What Doesn't Work

  • PS4 games (architecture gap).
  • PS2 games on non-BC models (no workaround besides PS2 Classics on PSN — limited selection).
  • Peripherals: Guitar Hero controllers, EyeToy, multitaps often fail.

If PS2 BC is critical, buy a launch CECHA/B 60 GB model (watch for YLOD) or just keep a PS2.
