PS5 Noise Levels: Quieter Than PS4 Pro, But Can Get Loud Under Load

PS5 Acoustic Profile

Generally quieter than PS4 Pro in typical use, thanks to:

  • Larger 120 mm double-sided intake fan (lower RPM for same airflow)
  • Vapor chamber + liquid metal TIM on SOC → lower temps
  • Optimized power curves (RDNA 2 / Zen 2 more efficient per watt)

When It Gets Loud

  • Demanding Titles: Demon's Souls, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake 2 push GPU/CPU → fan ramps to 2,800–3,200 RPM (audible ~38–42 dB)
  • Extended Sessions: Heat soak after 2–3 hrs raises baseline fan speed
  • Dust / Poor Ventilation: Enclosed cabinets choke intake; clean vents quarterly
  • Coil Whine: Some units exhibit high-pitched electrical noise under load (lottery)
  • Disc Drive: Spinning physical discs adds mechanical noise (not fan)

Mitigation

  • Vertical orientation (better convection)
  • 15 cm clearance all sides
  • Cap FPS in-game (e.g., 60 FPS cap) to reduce load
  • Digital editions avoid disc noise

If fan screams at idle or rattles, it's a bearing defect — contact Sony support (warranty covers 1 year).
