Is PSP Compatible with PS3? (Direct & Indirect Ways)

No direct compatibility. The PSP (MIPS, 333 MHz) and PS3 (Cell PPE+7 SPEs) are different architectures. You cannot plug a PSP into a PS3 and play games, nor transfer saves directly via USB (PS3 reads PSP saves only for specific cross-save titles).

Indirect Ways to Play PSP Games on PS3

  1. PS2 Classics / PSP Remasters on PS Store: Sony officially ported ~30 PSP games to PS3 as native "PSP Remasters" (e.g., God of War: Origins Collection, MGS: Peace Walker HD, Persona 3 Portable — wait, P3P not on PS3). **Check Store → PSP Remasters.** These are PS3-native ports, not emulation.
  2. Remote Play (PSP → PS3): The PSP can **remote-play** PS3 games (video streamed from PS3 to PSP over Wi-Fi/LAN). Requires PS3 firmware 3.0+, PSP firmware 6.0+. Limited to supported titles (mostly early PS3 games). Laggy, 480p max.
  3. PS Vita / PS TV (Better): Vita/PS TV natively plays **PSP digital games** (via PS Store) + PS1 + Vita games. Remote Play to PS4/PS5 works well. This is the true successor.
  4. PPSSPP on PC / Android: Best way to play PSP games upscaled. Not on PS3.

Save Transfers (Limited)

  • PS3 → **Saved Data Utility (PSP/Other)** → Copy PSP saves *from* Memory Stick Duo (via USB adapter) *to* PS3 **only for games with explicit cross-save support** (e.g., MLB The Show, ModNation Racers, Peace Walker).

Bottom line: You cannot pop a UMD or Memory Stick into a PS3 and play. Buy PSP Remasters on PS3 Store, or use a Vita/PS TV/PC for the full library.
