PS3 Price Guide (2024): Discontinued, Used Market Only

There is no "New PS3." Sony discontinued PlayStation 3 production **worldwide in 2017** (Japan May 2017, West earlier). Zero new stock exists at retail.

Used Market Pricing (2024 Estimates)

ModelTypical Used Price (USD)Notes
Super Slim (4000/4200 series) 500GB/1TB$120–$180Most reliable, quiet, low power. Best buy.
Slim (2000/2500/3000 series) 160-320GB$90–$140Good. Check for YLOD history (rare on Slim).
Fat (BC: CECHA/B/C/E) 60/80GB$150–$300+**PS2 Backward Compatible.** High demand. High YLOD risk. Needs thermal paste repaste.
Fat (Non-BC: CECHG/H/J/K/L/M/P/Q) 40-160GB$80–$130No PS2 BC. Still YLOD risk. Less desirable.

Hidden Costs

  • Controller: DualShock 3 (used $20-35, fake "Sixaxis" clones rampant).
  • HDMI Cable: Not included often.
  • Battery: DS3 internal Li-ion often dead. Replacement $10 + solder/clip skill.
  • CFW (Hen/CFW): Enables homebrew, backups, PS2 Classics on non-BC. Requires specific firmware (4.82-4.90) & compatible model.

Vs. Modern Consoles

  • PS4 Slim (Used): $150–$200. 1000x library, remote play, Share button, 1080p/60 standard.
  • PS5: $449 (Digital) / $499 (Disc). PS4 BC, 4K/120, SSD.

Verdict: Buy a **Used PS3 Super Slim (500GB/1TB)** only if you *specifically* want PS3 exclusives (MGS4, RDR, InFamous, Resistance, MotorStorm, Demon's Souls, 3D Dot Game Heroes, Folklore) or PS1/PS2 Classics via PSN/CFW. Otherwise, **PS4 Slim is better value**.
