PS3 Controller on PS2? Not Compatible—Here's What Works Instead

No, a PS3 controller (Sixaxis or DualShock 3) does not work on PlayStation 2. The hardware and protocols are fundamentally incompatible.

Why They Don't Work

  • Different Port: PS2 uses a proprietary 8-pin controller port. PS3 uses USB (wired) or Bluetooth (wireless).
  • Different Protocol: PS2 controllers use a custom synchronous serial protocol. PS3 uses USB HID / Bluetooth HID.
  • No Adapter Exists: No commercial adapter bridges PS3 controller → PS2 port. (PS2→PS3 adapters exist, but not reverse.)

What Does Work on PS2

  • Original DualShock 2 (wired)
  • Licensed third-party PS2 controllers (Logitech, Mad Catz, Katana)
  • PS1 controllers (work but lack analog button pressure sensitivity)

If You Want Wireless on PS2

Look for a Logitech Cordless Action Controller (2.4 GHz RF, native PS2 receiver). It's the only reliable wireless option for the original console.
