XMB (Cross Media Bar) on PS3 Explained

XMB stands for Cross Media Bar – the PS3’s iconic horizontal/vertical grid interface. Key traits:

• Category columns (Games, Video, Music, Photo, Network, Settings) navigated left/right.
• Items within category scrolled up/down.
• Real-time previews – video thumbnails, music waveforms, game art.
• Customizable – themes, background images, icon arrangement.
• Unified media hub – launches games, plays media, browses web, accesses PSN.

Replaced by the dynamic “PlayStation Dynamic Menu” on PS4/PS5, but XMB remains praised for clarity and low resource usage.
